Bear Lake, often called the Caribbean of the Rockies, is renowned for its vibrant turquoise waters. During my most recent visit, I set out to capture the lake at its most luminous moment — when the midday sun revealed a glow so striking it seemed to merge sky, water, and land into one seamless canvas.
The lake’s signature color comes from a unique combination of suspended limestone particles and natural depth. These microscopic mineral sediments reflect and scatter sunlight in a way that absorbs warmer tones and amplifies blue-green wavelengths, giving Bear Lake its iconic turquoise hue. This rare optical effect makes the water appear to shift in intensity depending on light conditions, season, and even the angle from which it is observed.
This new piece, Turquoise Glow at Bear Lake, is a celebration of that harmony. The emerald-green grass along the shoreline blending effortlessly into the lake’s turquoise waters created a visual balance that was both powerful and serene.
