Two Horizons, One Message – Stories from the Great Salt Lake

“Another day in paradise” — that phrase feels almost ironic when we look at Utah’s Great Salt Lake today.
And yet, it’s exactly how I felt the day I captured Fragile Nature – Vast Expanses of Land.

This blog is about two pieces. Two moments. Two stories.
But they all point to the same truth: nature is both a gift and a mirror. And what we do with it reflects who we are.

Firelit Serenity – Where Beauty and Tension Meet

October 28, 2023.
I was standing between two worlds:
To the west, the Great Salt Lake shimmered under a sky of fire — glowing reeds, the quiet silhouette of Antelope Island, and the kind of light that feels like prayer.
Behind me, Willard Bay — a man-made reservoir separated from the lake by a 1960s dike. It holds freshwater for irrigation and recreation.

That moment was breathtaking. But it was also layered.

This image, Firelit Serenity Over Great Salt Lake, reminds us that the choices we make leave ripples in the landscape. We create. We preserve. We also take. And sometimes, we forget.

But beauty invites memory. And memory invites responsibility.

Fragile Nature – The Island That Changed Me

Antelope Island changed me long before I was a photographer.
I met it in 2018 — not as a project, but as a quiet wonder. Its white salt and terracotta soil, its wild bison, and the surreal thought that such a vast saltwater lake exists in the middle of the U.S.

Years later, in spring of 2022, I returned with a camera and a deeper sense of purpose.
At 11:25 a.m., I captured Fragile Nature – Vast Expanses of Land. A cloud floated above, mimicking the textures of the dry lakebed below. What used to be covered in water now revealed salt patterns and etched trails — like ancient roads leading back to our beginnings.

The Bonneville Salt Flats often get more attention. But this place, this island…
It speaks to our fragility and our design. To the Creator’s beauty and the consequences of change.

🌎 What These Pieces Have in Common

Both scenes are stunning. Both carry light and stillness.
But more than anything, they both hold contradiction:

  • Firelit Serenity shows water glowing with life… beside a reservoir built to hold it.

  • Fragile Nature shows dry earth and salt… in a place that once held waves.

They remind us that conservation isn’t just about action.
It’s about remembrance. It's about presence. It's about humility.

Let’s Talk About It

I didn’t plan to become a conservation storyteller.
But photography opened my eyes to what we’re losing — and what’s still worth saving.

If these images speak to you, I invite you to share your own reflections.
What do you see when you look at a shrinking lake or a glowing sunset?
What do you feel when beauty comes with a shadow of loss?

I believe we need more spaces to talk about these things — not in anger or fear, but with honesty and hope.
