It Starts at Home: Why Desert Landscaping Matters in Utah

For 3.5 months, we waited.

We planned, imagined, and trusted that what we were building would be worth it. And today, standing in front of our home, I can say—it truly is.

But this is not just about a beautiful yard.

This is about a decision.

Living in Utah means living with awareness. Our landscapes are shaped by snowmelt, fragile ecosystems, and a constant reminder that water is not unlimited. And yet, so many outdoor spaces still rely on heavy irrigation—green lawns that demand more than this land can sustainably give.

We chose a different path.

Instead of grass, we embraced rock, texture, and natural elements that reflect the desert we call home. A landscape that doesn’t fight the environment—but lives in harmony with it.

This choice wasn’t just aesthetic. It was intentional.

As a photographer working on my long-term project Utah’s Lakes & Reservoirs, I’ve witnessed firsthand how vital water is—and how vulnerable it has become. Shorelines changing, water levels fluctuating, ecosystems adapting.

And it made me ask myself:

How can I talk about conservation… and not live it?

This yard became part of that answer.

It’s a small step. But meaningful ones always are.

I’m deeply grateful to Chad's Landscape & Irrigation for their professionalism and vision in bringing this space to life. Their work helped transform not just our home—but the way we connect with it.

Because sustainability doesn’t start in policies or campaigns.

It starts at home.
